She and her husband Arnold own and run Berkin Bees and Candles by Bereden, but Judy has developed an acute allergy to bee stings. "But Arnold went the other way," she says. "He's become immune to the stings." So are bee stings an unavoidable occupational hazard? Not according to Arnold. "On a bad night you may get 200 stings but if you're not in a hurry you won't get any." Judy adds: "You've got to really like bees to stick with it." She now concentrates on producing 100 per cent pure beeswax candles and leaves the bee handling to her husband. Through their website at www.bereden.com.au, the couple sell an enormous range of plain, novelty, church and floating candles. They have sent candles all over Australia and even as far as the US. No order is too big or too small. Judy recently acquired a new catalogue of candle moulds from England and can source moulds for any special request. The Berkins' apiaries are totally chemical free so the candles have nothing added except the cotton wick. The couple say pure beeswax candles burn up to four times longer than other candles, have a pleasant aroma and can even help with breathing problems. According to an American study, beeswax candles release negative ions that rid the air of pollutants. Arnold and Judy began their love affair with bees in 1970 and have been operating commercially since 1972. Judy says they committed themselves to the venture because "Arnold was a motor mechanic but got sick of the nuts and bolts". Although they started in the SE of SA, the Berkins moved to Edenhope "to take advantage of the many flora sources for our honey". They keep their bees at various sites and often move the hives to maintain the supply of nectar at different times of year. Their bees gather nectar from clover, lucerne, blue gum, red gum, string bark, the mallees and orange trees. Most of the honey they collect is sold to Capilano but they keep small amounts for sales at their door. Judy and Arnold have a number of side interests that they also operate from their home at 23 Elizabeth St, Edenhope. They use N-fix organic soil nutrient on all of their flora and also sell the product. Arnold says N-fix helps soil recover from damage caused by chemicals and mistreatment. He says it "overcomes nutrient lock-up of fertilisers so plants' nectar-flow increases and you get more honey". Since Arnold had a heart attack at the age of 45, he and Judy have been advocates of dietary supplements and herb products. They stock an incredible array of natural products for ailments from tiredness to smelly feet. Arnold is also a qualified Bowen therapist. Bowen therapy involves slow and gentle manipulation of muscles and connective tissue to stimulate energy flow and activate the body's own healing resources.
